Using Horizon Pines in Kobayat as a base for walking in Akkar — what is on the doorstep, how to plan further afield, and who to ask before you go.

Start With What Is on the Doorstep

This guide explains how to plan walking from a base in Kobayat, and where to get current route information. We have not surveyed the longer routes ourselves, so distances, timings and difficulty ratings here come from the people who have — not from us. What we can describe is the ground we are on. Horizon Pines sits inside pine forest at around 1,100 metres, and the forest immediately around the site has natural paths through it. That is the easiest walking available here: you can start from your tent, and you are never far from it. It suits an early morning walk or a short one before dinner.

Planning Something Longer in Akkar

Beyond the site, two names you will come across when you start reading about walking in Akkar are the Qammouaa area and the Beino reserve. Both are within driving distance of Kobayat. We would rather you asked locally about current access and conditions than took a description from us. The Lebanon Mountain Trail also runs the length of the country. The Lebanon Mountain Trail Association is the right source for its routes, maps and which sections are currently walkable — their information will always be more current than ours. For anything beyond the forest around the site, we will point you at a local guide or the LMTA rather than hand you a route we cannot stand behind. Access and conditions in the mountains change, and they change faster than a blog post does.

Sensible Preparation for Mountain Walking Here

None of this is unusual, but altitude and remoteness make it matter more than it would on a coastal walk. Water. Carry more than you think you need, and do not count on finding it. Layers. It is cooler up here than on the coast, and it cools quickly once the sun is off the slope. Footwear. Trainers are fine on the forest paths around the site; anything rockier wants proper grip. Navigation. Download offline maps before you leave — signal is patchy away from the village. Timing. Start early in summer and leave yourself daylight to get back. Tell someone. If you are staying with us and heading out for the day, tell us where you are going and roughly when you expect to be back. We would rather know. If you want to build a weekend around walking, the season-by-season guide covers when to come, and the Akkar camping guide covers the practical side of getting here.
