Where Akkar Is, and Why It Stays Quiet

Akkar is Lebanon’s northernmost governorate, and it sees far fewer visitors than the mountain destinations most people can name. Kobayat sits up in its mountains at roughly 1,100 metres, surrounded by pine forest. The practical effect for a camper is simple: cooler air in summer, darker skies at night, and campsites that are not shoulder to shoulder in August. The reason it stays quiet is not distance so much as habit. From Beirut the drive is about two hours, and from Tripoli about thirty minutes. Most of that is ordinary road; the mountain section at the end is the part that feels like arriving somewhere.

What Camping Here Actually Involves

Camping in Akkar ranges from wild pitching to serviced sites, and the difference matters more than it does at lower altitude — mostly because of water, cold nights and how far you are from a shop. At Horizon Pines the pitches sit inside the existing pine forest on stone terraces, with running water, hot showers, electricity, fire pits, BBQ areas and secure gated parking. Family camping is $10 per guest with your own tent, or $15 with a tent and mattress provided, for 2–6 people. Group and scout camping takes 20–120 people. If you would rather not pitch anything at all, the glamping options are furnished and ready on arrival. The altitude means nights here are usually cooler than on the coast, so bring a warmer layer than the Beirut forecast suggests. It is the thing we most often end up telling first-time visitors.

Practical Notes Before You Drive Up

This is what we tell guests who are coming up for the first time, based on running the site rather than on any official source — check anything that matters to your trip. Cash. Assume smaller businesses in the area are cash-only. Shopping. Do your main food shop before the mountain road rather than after it. Fuel. Fill up on the way rather than counting on a station higher up. Signal and maps. Coverage is better in the village than in the forest. Download offline maps before you set off. Season. All of our stays are open. If you are coming outside high summer, ask us what the weather is doing that week — we can tell you what it is actually like on the ground. There is more on the area itself in our guide to Kobayat and its surroundings, and on timing in the season-by-season guide.
