Why Families Choose Kobayat for Camping with Kids

A disclosure first: we run Horizon Pines, a camping and glamping site in Kobayat, Akkar, and many of our guests are families. This is the practical guide we wish every parent read before a first family camping trip in Lebanon.

The site is built inside existing pine forest at about 1,100 metres, with stone paths, stone terraces and outdoor seating. It is about 2 hours from Beirut and 30 minutes from Tripoli, and an ordinary car manages the last, slightly rough stretch of road. The property is gated, with free parking inside the grounds, which parents tend to appreciate once the children are running around.

What makes it work for camping with kids is the mix of freedom and basics. There is a playground for children. There are shared bathrooms with hot showers, 24-hour solar electricity for lighting and charging, and good 4G coverage (no Wi-Fi, which many parents count as a plus). There is first aid on site, and the nearest hospital is 1 km away.

Two things to plan for: the tap water is not drinkable, so bring enough drinking water for everyone; and nights are cooler than on the coast, so pack a warm layer for each child, even in summer.

Space to run and play under the pines, and a family camping pitch with a tent, sofa and table.

What to Do on a Family Weekend in Lebanon's Pines

A family weekend here is simple, and children rarely need more. They play on the playground, explore the forest paths around the site (the easiest walking), and help at the fire pits and BBQ stations. Guests bring and cook their own food, so shopping before the mountain road is part of the plan; the shared kitchen area and covered meal area make family meals easier.

After dark, the sky is dark enough for good stargazing, which is often the part children remember. Quiet time starts at 11:30 PM, so families with young children generally get a peaceful night.

Keep a close eye on younger children near the fire pits, and remember the pine forest gets dry in summer, so anything lit needs care. For longer walks with older children, see our walking and hiking guide. For outings in the village, including its churches (Mar Gerges Chwita is right next to the site), read things to do in Kobayat and Akkar.

Camping or Glamping for Your Family: Prices and Options

Family and friends camping gives you your own campsite for 2 to 6 people. It costs $10 per guest per night with your own tent, or $15 per guest per night with a tent and mattress provided (that is the full price, not an add-on). Children pay the same rate as adults. With the $15 option, bedding is not included, so bring your own sheets, pillows and covers; we keep a few spares for emergencies, at extra cost. A family of four pays $40 a night with its own tent, or $60 with ours.

A Lotus Belle tent suits a small family: it sleeps 3 adults, or 4 when the fourth guest is a child under 10, for $60 per tent per night. The two tents are Venus (2 single beds) and Mars (3 single beds), and an extra mattress is free on request. Bedding is provided, and you bring your own towels. Each tent has a private bathroom next door, and you use the shared kitchen area and the playground too.

A Premium Yurt is the easiest option with young children: a private bathroom with hot shower, a kitchenette with a fridge, a kettle and a sink, a double bed plus a sofa that converts to a second double, and a private terrace. Bed linen and towels are provided. It sleeps 4 adults, or up to 6 when two are children, for $120 per night for 2 nights or more, or $150 for one night. Families who first looked for a chalet often choose a yurt; we are also building chalets, so ask us on WhatsApp if you would like to know when they open.

Check-in is from 3:00 PM (late arrivals until 10:00 PM), check-out 11:00 AM, and one night is welcome. A 50% deposit reserves the stay; cancellations are accepted at least 7 days before arrival. We are open from roughly April to October. For a first-timer's checklist, read camping in Akkar, and for timing, the best time to camp in Lebanon.
